Care and Maintenance of your yurt

Expected lifespan

This can vary depending on  factors such as exposure to UV, exposure to extreme winds and other weather events and how damp or otherwise your site is. UV is the most destructive factor. Exterior canvas covers generally have a minimum 7 year with minimal maintenance, and significantly more if well cared for. Liners, insulation and frames should last indefinitely provided any issues with the exterior cover are addressed.

Recommended maintenance

As with any permanent outdoor structure, your yurt or tipi will accumulate dirt and stains and will develop a certain amount of ecology, depending on surrounding conditions. In full sun, they will tend to stay clean but will fade a bit. Under beech or manuka trees, they will gain black streaks, which may develop mildew, etc. Our advice to help maintain the appearance and maximize the life of your yurt is as follows:

  • Ensure no water can sit around the base of your yurt.  A raised floor is recommended but if you are pitching on the ground with a simple ground sheet you must ensure adequate drainage.

  • Inspect all tie-downs periodically to make sure they are in good condition and the correct tension.  They should be holding firmly but not have excessive tension that is putting undue strain on the cover or tie points.

  • Apply re-treatment solution to the exterior every few years.  We recommend an initial application after two or three years of use and then an additional coat every 2 years.  We can supply this product.

  • Apply wax to window zips periodically. Candle wax works well for this (we don't recommend using a sticky lubricant that may attract grit).

  • Avoid using harsh cleaning products or any kind of aggressive scrubbing water blasting etc.  This is more likely to damage the canvas than have a positive effect.

Replacements, upgrades, repairs

You can expect to get some deterioration/wear and tear of the highest wear points and most exposed components over time but our expectation is that all components should last for a minimum of 7 years. At some point you may be looking at purchasing a new outer cover.

Our yurts are built to very specific dimensions and angles. Each frame is built to exactly the same dimensions. This enables us to provide a great after market service for replacement, upgrades or repairs. Your original plans/layout are stored on file so we can match a new component with the original.

Warranty statement

Materials and workmanship are guaranteed for three years for full replacement or repair at our cost. In addition, our business ethic extends the workmanship guarantee to five years if the product has been cared for appropriately, used sensibly, pitched properly, stored well, and no unsuitable products or abrasion have been applied. Subject to these conditions, our canvas manufacturers will also stand by their product for five years. Minor isolated failures are to be expected, however, and this extension is limited to repair and service at our discretion.
